Glide into Petaluma Marsh and join the environmental resurgence of Tule or Shultz slough. Meander through waterways flush with life and rolling, oak studded hills while listening to the sound of your paddle break the surface of protected waters on this guided, 4 mile, round trip adventure.
The Petaluma River is a mosaic of tidal sloughs that empty into San Pablo Bay. The lower 12 miles of the Petaluma River flow through the Petaluma Marsh, the largest remaining salt marsh in San Pablo Bay. The marsh covers 5,000 acres and is surrounded by approximately 7,000 acres of reclaimed wetlands and remains one of the most important wildlife habitat and fish hatcheries in Northern California. Native plant and animal species are abundant, including some that are still listed as threatened or endangered, like the Ridgway’s Rail, Black Rail, the salt marsh harvest mouse, California red-legged frogs and Central California Coast steelhead. Egrets, herons and coots are very common and in the winter months millions of waterfowl along the Pacific Flyway call the San Pablo Bay their home. Paddling in the epicenter of the Petaluma Marsh provides an opportunity to see nature and the life on the river as it was hundreds of years ago.

Your adventure begins at Petaluma Stand Up Paddle located in the Petaluma Marina. After checking in with our team, you will be fitted for a life-preserver, given a paddle and fit for your kayak or SUP. Most of our fleet consists of sit-on-top single and tandem kayaks and stand up paddle boards that are stable and well suited for beginners. They also have compartments and bungee straps for locking down your water bottles and belongings. If you prefer more advanced equipment, it is available, please let us know prior to your arrival. Once all participants are fitted for equipment, our guide will discuss paddling on the Petaluma River, water safety and instruction on SUP or kayak paddling. Your adventure on water begins here or we may caravan 5 miles south along Lakeville Hwy to launch closer to the mouth of the sloughs. This will depend on fitness and experience of the group. You can expect to spend 2 hours on the water exploring the river with our knowledgeable guide at your side. This adventure is also suitable for participants who wish to explore without a guide.
